ASEAN Amidst Shifting Global Order: Dialogue with Professor Jeffrey Sachs

We were honoured to co-host Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Sir Jeffrey Cheah Honorary Distinguished Professor at Sunway University and President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network for an engaging dialogue on ASEAN’s pivotal role in the shifting global landscape. The event, hosted by Chancellor of Sunway University and ASLI Chairman, Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah explored the challenges and opportunities facing ASEAN, particularly with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025.

Professor Sachs shared his expertise on navigating economic disruptions, advancing sustainable development, and the importance of regional cooperation in today’s multipolar world. His insights emphasised ASEAN’s capacity to drive positive change despite geopolitical tensions, technological advancements, and ecological challenges.

Professor Sachs didn’t just focus on the usual geopolitics. He highlighted that “Asia has restored its place as the center of gravity of the world economy,” and as ASEAN rises in prominence, it will be key to shaping a sustainable future. Reflecting on ASEAN’s potential, he noted, “The rise of ASEAN is not just an economic phenomenon, it’s a transformative shift that can drive both growth and peace.”

His insights stressed that while the world may seem divided, ASEAN’s role as a regional leader is critical: “We are in an age of multipolarity, and it’s not a time for fear. It’s a time for opportunity, especially for ASEAN, as it steps into its role as a bridge between the East and West.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this inspiring session. We look forward to continuing the conversation as ASEAN moves towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
