Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah


Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, is the founder and chairman of Sunway Group, one of Malaysia’s largest property-construction groups. Tan Sri Cheah is also the founding trustee of Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF), the nation’s largest education-focused social enterprise.

Sunway Group comprises 12 established business divisions and a 14,000-strong employee base spanning across 50 locations worldwide, and is guided by its core values of Integrity, Humility and Excellence. As a master community developer, Sunway adopts a unique Build-Own-Operate model in three of its internationally-acclaimed integrated townships totalling almost 4,000 acres across Malaysia. In 2010, the JCF was established when Tan Sri Cheah transferred the equity of 12 institutions within the Sunway Education Group (SEG) worth more than RM720 million (now in excess of RM1 billion) to the JCF with the aim to democratise access to quality education for young deserving students, in perpetuity. Generous benefactions were made through the JCF to some of the world’s preeminent universities including Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford to facilitate two-way flow of scholars and researchers between SEG and the world-class institutions. Tan Sri Cheah has been most instrumental in elevating the education standards and benchmarks in Malaysia. To date, the JCF has disbursed scholarships exceeding RM210 million to thousands of deserving students. Tan Sri Cheah’s visionary leadership and magnanimous contributions to the communities and the nation, have been recognised by a multitude of international and national bodies. Among Tan Sri Cheah’s growing list of awards and conferment are nine honorary doctorates by leading international universities, Best CEO for Investor Relations (Mid Cap) by the Malaysian Investor Relations Association (2015), Malaysia’s Outstanding CEO by The Edge Billion Ringgit Club (2014) and Malaysia Outstanding Property Personality by The Edge (2013). In August 2014, Tan Sri Cheah received a special invitation from the President of Harvard University to be a member of the Global Advisory Council of Harvard University. He was also appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (“AO”) by the Prime Minister of Australia, and the Honorary Assistant Commissioner of Police title by Malaysia’s Inspector-General of Police.

Tan Sri Cheah is among Asia’s best-known philanthropists as recognised twice by Forbes Asia’s Heroes of Philanthropy in 2009 and 2015. He was appointed as Council Member of United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UNSDSN) in 2013. Tan Sri Cheah was also appointed by the Minister of Education to Malaysia’s education panel, which reviews the nation’s education system by the Minister of Education. He is the founding trustee of the Board of Mahathir Science Award Foundation, Razak School of Government, and the Perdana Leadership Foundation.
