ASLI INTRODUCTION
Vision & Mission
The Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) is a Malaysia's leading independent private Think Tank which is committed to the development of Asian leadership and strategic thinking. ASLI's vision is to create a better society. ASLI's mission is to help organizations enhance competitiveness, leadership and strategic capabilities through its public programmes, conferences, publications, policy research, business councils and CEO peer groups.
ASLI provides trusted insights to governments, businesses and the diplomatic community. It also acts as a knowledge channel through interaction and dialogues with thought leaders.
ASLI's value propositions are its valuable insights, high-level interaction, thought-leadership and in-depth research studies.
Business Councils ASLI has initiated a number of bilateral business councils aimed at facilitating trade and investments and business partnerships with a number of countries. It acts as the secretariat for the:-
- Malaysian-British Business Council.
- Malaysia-China Business Council.
- Malaysia- US Business Council.
- Malaysia-Russia Business Council.
- Malaysia-Indonesia Business Council.
Through these Business Councils a number of Business Forums have been held in London, New York, San Francisco, Beijing, Shanghai, Moscow, Jakarta, Singapore, Hannover, Munich, Sydney, Manila, Fukuoka, New Delhi, Sun City (South Africa). ASLI had also organised a number of focused business and investment missions to these countries.
CEO Peer Groups
ASLI's CEO Membership Programmes provides insights, thought leadership and up-to-date objective information to CEO members who participate in close-door dialogues. Frank, candid interchanges with Cabinet Ministries, Ambassadors and Thought Leaders help business leaders with their strategic business plans and decision-making. the CEO Peer Groups include:
- The Strategic Issues Forum.
- The CEO Council.
- The Corporate Malaysia Roundatable.
These CEO Programmes provide a Voice for Business and a link between the public and private sectors. Members obtain better understanding of the impact of major trends and strategic issues on business and investments.
Conferences & Forums
Since its inception in 1993, ASLI had organised a number of high-powered International Conferences as well as Annual Business and Industry Conferences. ASLI is widely recognized to be Malaysia's leading conference organizer. ASLI initiated the World Ethics & Integrity Forum, the World Islamic Economic Forum, the World Chinese Economic Forum, the Non-Aligned Movement's Business forum and the OIC Business Forum.
ASLI also provides professional conference management services to the Annual Asia Oil & Gas Conference organised by Petronas, the International CEO Conference organised by the Sabah Foundation. ASLI had managed the World Women Entrepreneur Conference, the World Ports and Harbour Conference , the Asia-Pacific Real Estate Conference, the Global Peace Forum, the Asia Global Leadership Forum and the Global Public Policy Conference. ASLI's annual series such as the Banking Summit, the Education Summit, the Capital Market Summit, the Property and Housing Summit and the National Utilities Summit are much sought-after events for providing platforms for the best minds in these key industries to exchange ideas and share knowledge and best practises. New programmes such as Corporate Social Responsibility and Climate Change offers new strategic insights and best practises.
Public Policy Studies
ASLI's Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) carries out research studies on nation-building contributing to important public debate on ethnic relations, good governance and corruption, poverty and income inequalities, education and human capital developement, national competitiveness and sustainable development. The CPPS programmes are aimed at building a fair and just multi-racial, multi-religious society. The Centre's Chairman & ASLI's CEO sit on the National Unity Advisory Panel whilst the CEO is also a Commissioner on Malaysia's Human Rights Commission.
Publications
ASLI produces a number of publications such as the ASLI Review, Malaysia Today, 21st Century Malaysia, the Banking & Financial Industry, Profiles of Excellence, CEO Malaysia, 5 Men & 5 Ideas. ASLI had conceptualized and produced a TV series - Malaysia Business Weekly. ASLI also publishes The Strategist and The ASLI review.

ASLI FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEE
Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah Fook Ling is the Founder and Chairman of The Sunway Group of Companies. An Accountant by training, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah is actively involved in both governmental and non-governmental organizations. The Minister of Finance appointed him a Member of the Financing Reporting Foundation in July 1997.
He is also an EXCO Member to the Malaysian Tourism Action Council. In 1996, he was honored with the Chairmanship of the Malaysian Industry-Government for Higher Technology (MIGHT) for Construction and Housing. He was appointed by the Minister of Education to the Higher Education Council. He has been conferred eight Honorary Doctorates by leading universities worldwide. Among others, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah sits on the Board of the Federation of Public Listed Companies, The National Kidney Foundation, The Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Liver Foundation and the Malaysian Business Council. He was voted the Property Man of the Year (Malaysia) in 1993 and the CEO of the Year (Malaysia) in 1996. |

Mr. Mirzan Mahathir, age 44, is the Founder and President of The Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) since 1993. Through his vision and commitment to developing international partnerships, strategic thinking and leadership, ASLI is now recognized as Malaysia's foremost conference organizer and knowledge channel.
He is also the Executive Chairman of Konsortium Logistik Bhd, Executive Chairman of Sabit Sdn Bhd and Director of Dataprep Holdings Bhd. Prior to this, he was an Associate, Investment Banking for Salomon Brothers, Hong Kong Ltd and an Associate Proprietary Equity Trading with Salomon Brothers Inc. New York. He is the Co-Chairman of the Malaysian-British Business Council, a Member of the Malaysian South-South Association, a Vice-Chairman of the Malaysian Shipowners Association and the President of the Container Hauliers Association of Malaysia. He is also the Founder and Chairman of Malaysian Youth Orchestra Foundation. Mr. Mirzan is a graduate of the Brighton Polytechnic in England with a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Computer Science and holds a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. |

DIRECTOR
Dato' Dr. Michael O.K. Yeoh is Founder, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer since 1993, of the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI), Malaysia’s leading private sector Think Tank and foremost conference organiser. He established the Centre for Public Policy Studies in ASLI to undertake public policy research. He is also a Trustee and Chief Executive Officer of the World Islamic Economic Forum Foundation and Secretary-General of the ASEAN Business Forum, the Malaysia-China Business Council and the Corporate Malaysia Roundtable.
In 2004, he was appointed by Prime Minister Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to be a member of the Royal Commission on Police. In 2006, he was appointed a Commissioner on Malaysia’s Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM). In 2005, he was first appointed by the Prime Minister to the National Unity Advisory Panel and in 2007 was re-appointed to a 2nd term in the Panel. He was also a member of the 1st and 2nd National Economic Consultative Council. He is also recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of the National Unity Foundation.
He has extensive Boardroom and Consulting experience over the past 30 years. Specialising in Corporate Strategic Planning, Asian Leadership Strategies and Political Economy. He has consulted for the World Bank, UNIDO, the Nomura Research Institute and the Economist Intelligence Unit. He has also sat on the Boards of Directors of the National Heart Institute, the Star newspaper, Sunway College, SBB Asset Management (a subsidiary of Southern Bank and Malaysia’s second largest fund management company managing over RM5 billion). He had been a Principal Adviser to Southern Bank, General Manager of Multi-Purpose Holdings and Chief Administrative Director of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA).
Au author of several books on Vision and Leadership and Business Strategies, he is also a sought-after speaker. He has addressed the Asia Society New York, the World Economic Forum, Wilton Park UK, Monash-Asia Institute and the Lowy Institute Australia, the Confederation of Indian Industry, the China Development Institute, the US-Asean Business Council Washington DC, the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Singapore and the Young Presidents Organization.
During his student days in Australia, he was President of the Monash University Malaysian Students Union. He was also Chairman of the Australia-New Zealand Graduates Association of Malaysia and Vice-President of the Malaysian Institute of Directors and Institute of Management Consultants.

DATO' DR. MICHAEL O.K. YEOH is Co-Founder & CEO of the Asian Strategy & Leadership
Institute (ASLI), Malaysia's leading independent Think Tank and foremost Conference Organiser
that brings together senior government, business and thought leaders in interactive, high-level
discussions. As CEO of ASLI, he conceptualised and founded the World Ethics & Transparency
Forum, the World Islamic Economic Forum, the World Chinese Economic Forum, the ASEAN
Leadership Forum and the Asia Economic Summit. He also established the Centre for Public
Policy Studies (CPPS) to undertake independent public policy research.
A strong advocate of international networking and track two confidence-building processes, he
helped set up the Malaysia-US Business Council, the Malaysian-British Business Council, the
Malaysia-Russia Business Council and Malaysia-Indonesia Business Council where he serves as
Executive Director of these Business Councils. He is also Joint Secretary-General of the Malaysia-
China Business Council, the ASEAN Business Forum and the Corporate Malaysia Roundtable.
Dato' Yeoh's management career covers over 10 years experience in the financial sector where he
was Principal Adviser and Executive Vice-President of Southern Bank. He was also a Director of
SB Venture Capital Corporation and SBB Capital Markets Sdn Bhd. He sat on the Board of SBB
Asset Management Company (then Malaysia’s second largest fund management company managing
over RM5 bill – USD1.5 bill assets, prior to the merger with CIMB Bank).
He has also extensive experience in the Education and Healthcare industries. He was appointed by
the Minister of Finance Incorporated to sit on the Board of Directors of Malaysia's National Heart
Institute. He was a Co-Founder and Director of Prime College and MSC-Syme Business School
(set up in association with Australia's Monash University). He was also Executive Director of
Sunway College and currently sits on the Council of the Wawasan Open University. He was
Managing Director of Malaysian Strategic Consultancy (the then Malaysian Representative of
Stanford Research Institute). He also sat on the Board of Star newspaper.
He graduated in Economics & Accounting from Monash University and did his practical accounting
training with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Melbourne. He has attended the Aresty Institute of
Wharton School in USA, the Melbourne Business School and UCLA's Graduate School of
Management. A Certified Management Consultant, he specializes in Corporate Strategic Planning,
Asian Strategy and Political Economy. He was Vice-President of the Institute of Management
Consultants and the Malaysian Institute of Directors. He is a Member of the Institute of Directors,
UK.
Contributing his time to National Service, he served on the First and Second National Economic
Consultative Council. He was appointed by the Prime Minister to the National Unity Advisory
Panel and the Royal Commission on Police. He was a Commissioner on Malaysia's Human Rights
Commission (SUHAKAM) and served as Chairman of its Economic, Cultural and Social Rights
Working Group.
He was recently appointed by the Prime Minister and Government of Malaysia to be Malaysia's
Representative on the new ASEAN High Level Task Force which was announced by the ASEAN
Heads of States and Governments to develop ASEAN Connectivity focusing on ICT, Education,
Human Capital Development, Transport, Power and Energy.
Dato' Yeoh has written several books on Management, Leadership and Malaysian Politics such as
Vision & Leadership, Management Strategies for Malaysian Companies, Globalization and the New
South and the Malaysian Chinese. A sought after speaker, he has addressed international
conferences and forums organised by the Asia Society New York, World Economic Forum,
Confederation of Indian Industry, China Development Institute, Young Presidents Organization,
Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Singapore, Michigan Business School, Wilton Park UK, the
Monash Asia Institute Australia and the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN).

Among others, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah sits on the Board of the Federation of Public Listed Companies, The National Kidney Foundation, The Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Liver Foundation and the Malaysian Business Council. He was voted the Property Man of the Year (Malaysia) in 1993 and the CEO of the Year (Malaysia) in 1996. |
