National Waste Management Conference 2018

Towards Sustainable Waste Management

Malaysians produce an average of 30,000 tons of waste every day.  Only 5 percent of it is recycled.

As Malaysia surges ahead with a renewed focus on urbanization and industrialization to maintain sustainable growth and development. However, with the ever-increasing population, rapid urbanization and industrialization, the waste generation as a result natural resource consumption is also rising at the equal pace.    The country’s build-up of waste is resulting in tremendous land and air pollution for the environment, health problems for communities and bottlenecks to economic growth.  Taken together, the problem of poor waste management in Malaysia is one of the nation’s biggest issues to date.

For years, local and national governments have been trying to curb the flow of garbage onto sidewalks, into landfills, over hillsides and through rivers, but Malaysia’s turbulent pace of change has made that process extremely difficult. Thanks to population increase, consumption and disposal rates are escalating faster than Malaysia’s utilities can handle.

Disposal of millions of tonnes of untreated garbage by the municipal bodies in the country is leading to health issues and environmental degradation.  Waste management has become a major challenge for the federal government, state governments and its municipal bodies. In 2016, Malaysia produced an average of 38,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, which include 15,000 tonnes of food waste. Therefore, the Malaysian government is committed to improve the quality solid waste management over the last decade.

Identifying the need for effective and efficient sustainable Waste Management as the need of the hour, the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) is organizing the ‘National Waste Management Conference’ in Kuala Lumpur.

The conference will be a unique forum for idea exchange, knowledge sharing, networking, exploring opportunities for collaboration and new business opportunities, while setting the policy agenda to meet future challenges in Waste Management.
