National Conference On Sustainability, Climate Change & CSR 2016

The SDG’s and Role of Business: Impact on Society

In September 2015, the United Nations launched the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda (SDA 2030). For the first time, a universal, integrated and ambitious agenda has been agreed upon action. SDA 2030 has 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The SDG’s has an impact on business and industry. Issues like climate change and global warming will affect agricultural production as well increase risks of drought and flooding and natural disasters.

Malaysia has a rich natural biodiversity and can play a lead role in agricultural diversification. Six of the SDG’s can be related to agricultural diversification.

The Prime Minister has emphasised that Malaysia will work towards a sustainable economy that balances socio-economic development and environmental health. The Prime Minister reiterated that Malaysia must take care of its environment, in particular the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem.

At the same time, inclusive development is another key challenge to ensure the bottom 40% of society or the B40 are not left out.

Many companies carry out a range of Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR programmes addressing the needs of the disadvantaged groups in the B40. How can these CSR programmes be aligned to the SDG’s? How can business partner with government and civil society organizations to deliver best practises for sustainability?

Last year, ASLI and the local office of UNDP hosted a public lecture by the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Chair of the UN Development Group Helen Clark on the Sustainable Development Goals. This National Conference put greater focus on the national solutions and strategies to roll out the SDG’s and in particular the role of business and civil society.
