Urban Transportation Forum 2015

Strategising and Enhancing the Malaysian Urban Public Transport

Urbanisation is the key trend for developing nations such as Malaysia. With urbanisation, comes the growing need for an efficient and cost effective urban public transportation system. This will raise the productivity level and access to opportunity that raises the profitable value of a nation’s economy. With 75% of Malaysians living in the city and surrounding suburbs, the need for transformation of the urban transportation has never been more important.  Statistics revealed that despite the urban sprawl, the usage of public transportation by commuters in Malaysia is mere 17%, opposed to the 62% in Singapore and higher 89% in Hong Kong. Worst of all, with the high rate of motorization & congestion, residents of greater Kuala Lumpur & Klang Valley are stuck in traffic for 250 million hours in a year. Obstacle for smoother connectivity often falls back on the lack of unification during planning stage by various transportation agencies.

The recent World Bank’s Malaysia Economic Monitor July 2015 revealed that the planning and delivery of the urban transportation is fragmented. Despite the interdependency by these agencies, limitation comes when coordination of planning takes place. While the current planning does promise a greater ease for future, the question is whether we are capable to manage the hidden complexity that spreads to the rest of cities in Malaysia? What are the real issues and threat? What are our opportunities? What are the new initiatives that are being rolled out for us to benefit from better connectivity in cities of Malaysia?
