The 5th World Chinese Economic Forum

THE WORLD CHINESE ECONOMIC FORUM (WCEF)

INTRODUCTION

Since its founding in 2009, the World Chinese Economic Forum (WCEF) has become an institutionalised Annual Forum, bringing together over 2,000 participants from more than 25 countries worldwide.  Founded in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, the 4th Forum was held in Melbourne Australia, hosted by the City of Melbourne and the State Government of Victoria in the distinguished presence of the Governor and the Premier.  The WCEF is supported by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister and the Government of Malaysia, as well as the China Council for Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the China Mayors Association, the China Development Institute (CDI) and the China National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (China-PECC).  Growing support for WCEF shows that this is an idea whose time has come.

WHY THE WCEF?  THE CONTEXT:

1.      The IMF has forecasted that by 2017, China will outstrip the USA to become the world’s largest economy.  A study by KPMG also shows that China can outstrip Silicon Valley in Innovations.

2.      China has become the largest trading partner of the 10 ASEAN countries of Southeast Asia since the China-ASEAN FTA came into full effect.

3.      With Europe continuing in recession, it is China and Southeast Asia that will drive global growth and recovery.  The establishment of the Regional Comprehensive Partnership Agreement (RCEP) linking China with ASEAN, Japan, Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand will establish the world’s largest FTA.

4.      The worldwide Global Chinese Diaspora has enormous economic power, accumulated wealth and human talent in all continents of the world.

AIMS OF THE WCEF

The WCEF aims to promote closer linkages between China and Southeast Asia, as well as between China and the West.

It aims to foster business partnerships, people exchanges, economic cooperation and academic collaboration.

WCEF also aims to create greater understanding of the peaceful rise of China and the impact of China on regional peace, stability and prosperity and the vast opportunities from China’s peaceful development.  WCEF seeks to foster closer connectivity among the Global Chinese Diaspora and business collaboration among them.
